I have a question that I thought someone here might be able to answer.

I am in the process of eating a better balanced diet. I have been tracking what I eat recently and have realized I don't always consume the recommended amount of protein daily. In fact, sometimes I barely eat any protein.. some days I might eat most of a block of tofu and other days I'll have nothing or very little in the way of protein. A protein roller coaster if you will.

What I am wondering is, does one's body store protein and does it all balance out in the end or should I be trying to eat the correct amount on a daily basis? I know the body stores some things.. fat.. b12 etc but I'm not sure on this one.

Any help appreciated! :)

Hi Crystal:
I think eating as balanced as you can throughout the day (protein at each meal) is necessary. Here's some info for you:
HOW TO FIGURE OUT YOUR VEGAN PROTEIN NEEDS

An average person (meaning with no extraneous physical challenges) needs approximately 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight.
Without getting you TOO bogged down in the finer details, I'd like to give you a quick overview of how much protein you need for your good health.

To figure out how many kilograms you weigh, simply multiply your weight by .45 (point 45)...

So if you weigh 105 pounds, that means you weigh 47.6 kilograms. And since...

...an average person (meaning with no extraneous physical challenges) needs approximately 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight...
...then you would shoot for right around 47 grams of protein per day.

As you already must know, legumes, nuts and seeds are great protein sources too!
Good luck!
Sherri

Though I have never worked out my dietary protein, I have kids and thus include meat/dairy substitutes in a lot of our meals. Perhaps there's some you aren't even aware of if you only shop at regular stores. We also have vegan multivitamins. If one isn't interested in simulated meat/dairy products because of their similarity to animal products, tofu can be added to anything and everything. Nuts and lentils are a staple in our house, as well. Because we rely heavily on soy, I get non-soy milk drinks in order to mix it up a bit - rice or almond.

Can you tell me the brand name and where you buy the "vegan multivitamins"? I know a vegetarian multivitamin and order it from the US.

Just want to add a little comment on the protein.

1 g/kg protein is generally right. However, extra protein is useless to our body, and it is extra burden to our body. So we should eat less than the limit. The body can always convert other content to protein when needed.

I train as a competitive amateur boxer at 80kg , and I get by on 50-70 grams of protein per day. I really think we are encouraged by the media to eat too much protein.
