I haven't tried the other Joey's in Calgary but I eat at the one in the NE several times a month. They have a couple of dishes that they can make vegetarian or vegan at request (look for the "S" symbol on the menu). The servers aren't super knowledgeable about the ingredients (or veganism) but I have spoken with the sous chef, Dave Wallace, a number of times and he is very accomodating. This is a great restaurant for those who like to have old favourites made with a soy "meat".
I usually get the soy ginger "beef" appetizer (the crispy noodles that it typically comes with aren't vegan but you can obviously get it served without) and then the soy butter "chicken". You will need to specify to the server that you don't want the yogurt or cream in the sauce- some of the servers will tell you that's not possible but it is. Another server told me it has chicken stock in it but I confirmed with Dave that it does not and he's going to be educating the servers about this. I never would have guessed with restaurant would have vegan options like this so thought I'd share that it does and they are yummy options! It also doesn't hurt to call ahead to let them know you are vegan- I believe they pre-make a lot of the sauces so it takes a little longer to whip up the vegan version. Calling ahead helps to cut down on the extra wait time. |

I could have sworn I wrote this in the restaurant forum. Oops.

Thanks for all those the tips as I've always avoided Joey Tomato's in the past.
If there is enough interest in this discussion and since you like and know the restaurant so well as you eat there often would you mind if a group of vegans/vegetarians joined you there at least once? ;-) Would you consider hosting a Club VEG Vegan dineout at this place in one of the upcoming months? Cooking for a group of vegans would give Joey Tomato's practice and encouragement to male their menu more vegan friendly, and you could physically show us the kinds of things we can order there. Anybody interested in going to Joey's as a group, please also post here and lets us know. |

sure I'd love to host a dinner there! Might be nice to go as it gets a little warmer as they have a nice patio :)

I'd be interested! I had no idea they were vegan-friendly. Sounds like a great idea :)
